The 3D Attractors collection of images are created by iterating or integrating the mathematical expression defining the system and at the end of a predetermined (huge) number of steps illuminating the pixel on the screen corresponding to the result. The color is chosen for each pixel by an imaging algorithm. Then because attractors are generally not subject to wild variations over small bits of space, the algorithm guesses what color the pixels between data points should be. Finally the algorithm adds highlights and shadows to simulate illumination by a light source. All this work is done by the Chaoscope program published by Nicolas Desprez.
